Early Exploration of Texas

Cabeza de Vaca and Coronado were two explorers who played an important role in Texas history.  Spain sent them to conquer new land in the Americas.   The leaders of Spain also wanted to gain riches like gold, and they also wanted to convert the Native Americans to Catholicism.

The Niña, Pinta and the Santa María  sailed from Palos, Spain in 1492. Columbus captained the Santa Maria, leading an expedition in search of a new trade route.  Over two months later, Columbus discovered America when he and his crew finally saw land.  They went ashore and met natives there. Then they sailed on to Cuba and to Hispaniola where the Santa Maria was wrecked. After getting his men ashore and onboard the Nina, Columbus sailed back to Europe.
